The Definitive Guide to Navigation

The American Practical Navigator offers excellent value for money. Now that Volumes II and III of the Royal Navy's Admiralty Manual of Navigation are out of print, Bowditch is one of the few comprehensive navigation manuals available on the commercial market that is not prohibitively expensive. It would appear that production is subsidized by the United States Navy, which explains the very low price for such a hefty tome.The American Practical Navigator is sufficiently detailed to appeal to the professional seafarer, whilst remaining relevant to amateur sailors. The text is divided up into sections on pilotage, coastal navigation & chartwork, tides & currents, and an extensive explanation of the theory behind ocean navigation. This includes an erudite and lucid review of navigational mathematics and elements of nautical astronomy.Further chapters relate to meteorology, tropical storms, passage planning, ship stability and other aspects of seamanship. It would be hard to find a more comprehensive manual of navigation, and no serious mariner should put to sea without it.

This book has been the ultimate navigation text for hundreds of years. Updated to latest edition by the US Government Publications it is completely up to date. Every navigator has a copy and refers to it often.
