4Terrorist attacks
By JPS
This is book five of the Expanse and the authors seem to have reverted to the ingredients that made the three first volumes so successful. With a thousand worlds opened for colonisation by the human race, the societies and economies of both the inner planets (Earth and Mars) and the Belt (the collection of space stations spread across the Solar System) are disrupted, with tens of thousands of colonists leaving for the “new worlds”. The impact is particularly devastating for Mars, which is losing a large part of its population, and for the Belters.Describing this huge impact and how a splinter group of terrorists creates further disruption by engineering a major planet-wide terrorist attack and catastrophe is one of the book’s strongpoints. Related features include the mysterious disappearance of both civilian and military ships and several assassination attempts aimed at removing the leaders of Earth, Mars and the Belters. The other novelty and strongpoint of this book is to provide the reader with insights into the somewhat shady past of two of the main characters of the series. By and large, the insights mostly provide each of the characters with more depth and go a long way in explaining their current and past behaviours. Two female characters – a Martian Marine and a “golden girl” turned murderess – also make a remarkable comeback. As per usual, you can expect lots of action and an exciting read. Another little twist is that, for once, the crew of the Roccinante is split up across the solar system and only coming together towards the end of the story. There are however some glitches here and there. The book simply does not explain how the terrorists managed to approach their target undetected and launch their devastating attack. Given the nature of this attack and the weapon used to conduct it, this omission tends to somewhat damage the story’s credibility. There were a few points in the characterisation that did not quite work for me. One point which I did not find very convincing was William Holden’s tendency for feeling sorry for himself just because all of his crew members have taken off on their respective errands, leaving him all alone. Another one was the suitably “evil” Marco - the supposedly charismatic and extremely manipulative "terrorist-in-chief". Somehow, I had trouble in finding the character credible. Finally, I still have my usual quibble about the book ending somewhat abruptly. To be fair, however, the fact that I have this quibble also means that I found the story exciting and much more appealing that the two previous episodes. In other words, I wanted more of it…

3Good but starting to meander
By Amazon Customer
Nemesis Games didn’t quite grab me like the previous books. Some interesting character development but I would have liked to see the central story progress a lot more within the given space.I am reminded of another popular series, which started great but by book 6 it was obvious the author was just stringing things out over too many books. Too much filler and not enough story or resolution, I hope this isn’t the case here. The next book appears to attract similar criticism, and given the kindle edition is still selling for £9.99 two months after its release, I’m not inclined to continue with the series for the moment.Excellent up to this point so please don’t milk it and turn a great story into another padded out series that never ends!

2Disappointing
By Chris
Another sadly disappointing installment in the Expanse series. The first half of the book is rather boring and scene-setting, while all the meat of the story is in the second half. I wasn't really interested in the sub-story about Naomi, and as other reviewers have noted, most of the initial plot elements about the "missing ships" simply goes away until the literal epilogue of the book. The main events could be summarised in about one paragraph, really. If you're thinking of buying, wait for a sale first.
