5What a superb book!
By David James
I bought this book when I decided to start getting back into woodworking. I love the feel of making something using hand tools only! There is very minimal noise, minimal amounts of dust create and it is so much more soothing as a hobby. In this book Tom Fidgen shows us all how to get back to using hand tools. Tom starts the book by describing how he started out in wood work and then goes on to explain what forms a good basic tool set. From here we learn a little about sharpening and making some very useful workshop tools such as a shooting board. We are then taken on to learn how to make six well chosen and useful projects.I thoroughly enjoyed this book myself and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to get back into the use of hand tools for wood working. This is not a guide to making hand made furniture book. It is a book looking to get people interested in hand tools using them and using them correctly.

3A curate's egg.

Excellent joinery. Variable writing. Poor English. Dreadful editing. The author veers between straightforward, well illustrated and detailed descriptions of his joinery and rather odd spirit-guide, zen philosophy about woodworking.Having decided to buy a book specifically about hand tool use most readers probably don't need much convincing about its benefits. The author doesn't miss an opportunity to reaffirm that we've made the right life choice! The meat of the book is a description of several different projects that build a set of skills. This is well done and carefully illustrated with clear photographs and less clear drawings. There are some useful tips for particular skills and a reassuring have-a-go attitude.Sadly the English is woeful. This can't be forgiven by the folksy American style (the writer is Canadian). Mistakes such as "they're" instead of "their" should be corrected by the writer proof-reading his own work and certainly shouldn't slip by a professional editor. This sort of thing might be forgiven in a stream-of-consciousness blog but there's no place for it in print.I look forward to the author's next book. He sounds so exhausted at the end of this one that it might be some time coming.I hope he finds a better editor.

3Disapointing
By Bernard Naish
This book was a disapointment as it gave nothing new about making furniture by hand. It does however give a useful selection of projects and shows how these are made using hand tools and if these projects are made it will give a good grounding in the art of hand cabinet making. He suggests that shooting boards might be named chutes but this is not so as the word shoot comes from shooting a straight edge as in shooting straight with a gun.
