Is God a Mathematician?

The title presupposes the existence of God and questions whether such a deity may have invented mathematics, so this book may be instantly dismissed by those of an atheist persuasion. Similarly, people who are indifferent to maths in whatever form (which probably applies to the majority of the population) may be deterred from considering what is actually an interesting read from a historical perspective. The author identifies those who have considered this question ranging from ancient Greeks such as Plato through to numerous individuals between the 16th and 20th centuries who, in spite of opposition from the religious establishment, continued to make major contributions to the advancement of maths and philosophy. The content is mainly textual and manages to convey the story without recourse to anything more complicated than Pythagorean theorem although the chapter on logicians may be considered somewhat obscure.Clearly the question posed has troubled mankind for millennia and continues to do so despite all the exotic mathematics and the philosophical arguments that have developed over the years. Predictably, it is left to the reader to make up their own mind based upon the evidence presented as to whether mathematics was invented or discovered and if the apparent parallels between nature and maths are simply co-incidental or indicative of some degree of intelligent design.
