Mixed thoughts

A strange, somewhat curious little book that still manages to engage.How to describe it. Well it is aimed at children but it is likely that many foodies and those with an innovative eye might find something of interest as well - whilst saying that they bought it for their children!This is a slim tome dominated by large, vibrant and somewhat strange images. Photographer Carl Warner is trying to encourage children to learn about different foods and stop being fussy eaters by exploring a range of miniature colourful landscapes, organised by colour and accompanied by a short humorous verse.So, for example, one gets to consider that "If all the world were brown, We'd live on chocolate cake, Where chocolate trains would ride around a melted-toffee lake" and this is accompanied by a wonderful chocolate train riding around on chocolate bar rails within a chocolate forest.Many of these images would look great framed up, but it is sad that the book has been designed so that there is the fold running right in the middle. A larger size book or smaller pictures would have allowed you to even frame a chosen picture or two when you have finished with the book - but maybe that was the intention to stop this!Whether this book will engage children to knowingly change their ways is debatable, yet maybe it would hit many on a subconscious level. Anyway, one could even see adults taking inspiration from this book to perhaps create some weird and wonderful foodscapes with their own dishes.A paperback version of this book is to be published in addition to a hardback edition (reviewed here), which might make an impulse buy a little easier to make due to the price difference (GBP6 versus GBP10). This is of those books that you will either grab after a quick look on the shelf or leave it there questioning its purpose - but it is certainly worthy of a browse and consideration at the very least.

Great text with unbelievable pictures

My 7 year old daughter LOVES this book, especially the chocolate and sweets pages. The writing is excellent and the pictures of colour-coded food are frankly unbelievable. Very happy to have stumbled upon this.

gorgeous book for children or imaginative adults

If I'd had a book like this as a child I might have had some sort of answer when my mother told me not to play with my food. A delight as is his other book.
