My 8 year old son absolutely loves these books - not too thick either so a great step up from the likes of horrid henry. Stories are funny too - I would say ideal for age 7 upwards.

Why oh why didn't I know of this book as I child in the 70s???? My daughter was given this to read in Year one at Infant school (2014). She shares the same name as the heroine so it was especially special to her. A love of the book ensued and we read this over and over for about two months. (We have the first one too). I bet it fell out of popularity in schools in the 70s, 80s, 90s as its rather a scary theme, a wolf who tries over and over to catch a little girl called Polly. Polly always out-betters him. I wish I had her cleverness and wit! Cracking good stuff. A family heirloom methinks.

The two Polly books are wonderful - whimsical, intelligent, not in any way patronising. Best suited to be read to a child ages 5 upwards - adults also are amused.

Brimming with insight and applications - a must read for everyone

What makes this book a true classic is the fact it has many applications: power-hungry politicians, corporate strategists, the army generals amongst Amazon and your bog-standard malcontent - although more definitely exist to be found. Despite societies moving away from primal structures, the relevance of lessons learnt by Sun Tzu over 2000 years will continue to persist. Sun Tzu teaches how to resourcefully beat enemies with guile and strategy, utilse superior knowledge of the terrain, and utilise lines of communication and learn to think like his enemy.This version, is differentiated by a) the price; and b) Tom Butler-Browdon’s excellent introduction which frames the relevance of this manual for the modern reader, provides information about the historical context, and characterises the most successful warfare outcomes.The size makes it commuter friendly as well as an easy task to finish. Given the brief and focussed nature of the text, it is not a book that lasts – but luckily the massive scope for applications leave enough food for thought that the book to have a lingering aftertaste.

VERY INFORMATIVE AND INSTRUCTIVE

this age old book is still very relevant, the lessons in there though related to wars, can be highly and directly related to any competitive environment, be it school, politics, soccer and what have you. helps you to manage any opposition rightly without losing grounds, and prepares you greatly for any feat ahead. its a great read, and I recommend to any one looking to take on new territories.

Sometimes difficult to understand the author's concepts on war since ...

Sometimes difficult to understand the author's concepts on war since I have no military training nor do I wish to go to war. However, the concepts are apparently being used by CEO's of top companies so thought it would be worth reading, though did not see anything that could be translated to corporate workplace maybe I missed the lesson. It was worth reading for no other reason than to have an insight into how Chinese thought about war.

Empowering and Inspirational!

This is one book I could not wait for Amazon to make available in the UK. While there are plenty of reference books on specifics of knitted garment construction, I never came across such books written in crochet "language" until Dora Ohrenstein released her "Custom Crocheted Sweaters".When I finally got my copy, I was not disappointed. It contains ten stunning sweater designs, but they are not the main reason why I bought this book in the first place. This is not a book to admire the designs and leave on a shelf among your other pattern books. It's a fantastic reference to keep on your desktop and use whenever you want to make a well-fitting sweater from any pattern or even create a garment of your own design.This book teaches about all the main ingredients of a perfect sweater recipe and how to mix them wisely to create an impeccably fitting garment. It starts with a general overview of sweater construction and making, which covers such aspects as choosing the correct yarn and fiber, measuring your body, reading pattern schematics and the all important finishing techniques.It then moves on to the ten sweater designs each featuring a specific construction technique (such as top-down, dropped shoulder, fitted sleeve, raglan, etc.) and Dora walks the reader through making each of them. They progress comfortably from simpler to more complex ones and are accompanied by plenty of very detailed and well-explained lessons and master-classes on various alteration methods, including adjusting body and sleeve length, shaping necklines, creating bust darts, and many more.Although I may not crochet all of the sweaters in this book, I can't wait to go through all of the steps to get a firm grasp of the different construction methods, so I can use my knowledge to customise any sweater pattern or (hopefully!) create a design of my own.Many thanks to Dora for such an empowering and very inspirational book!

Before there was Eoin Colfer,Neil Gaiman,Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams-there was Robert Sheckley. Possibly the grandfatherof Sci-Fi Humour. This was the second book of his I read-the first being Mindswap. There's not too much humour in this but it includes popular themes of his-mind wiping and recovery and being hunted a la Tenth Victim.Thoroughly recommended.

ONEE-SAMA!!

A Certain Scientific Railgun Volume 2 contains chapters 8 to 13, some bonus 4 panel comics and a special preview of "Amazing Agent Jennifer".It is rated Teen due to violence, mild nudity and bad language.It reads right to left.This is the second manga volume, if you are new to Railgun, start from volume 1 (Certain Scientific Railgun Vol 1, A)Judgement continue searching for the "Level Upper". The more information they find about it, the more dangerous it seems.Saten Ruiko, whose power is level 0, is able to get her hands on a Level Upper but just as she was about to tell the others, Shirai Kuroko says that anyone found with a Level Upper will be taken into protective custody. So she keeps it to herself.Later on, Saten finds herself in trouble when she is approached by a gang, luckily Kuroko passes by and helps out. But that makes Saten feel useless so as a last resort, she uses the Level Upper with some of her friends. Unknown to her is the fact that everyone who uses the Level Upper eventually collapses and goes into a coma-like state.And Kiyama Harumi doesn't seem all that trustworthy as what was first thought.I really enjoyed this book, not as much as the first volume but it was still a good read. Kamijou Touma (from A Certain Magical Index) makes a few appearances in this volume. I love how Misaka Mikoto behaves around him.On the back of the book it says "With great power comes... loads of fan service." That is a misleading quote. This isn't a fan service kind of book. If I didn't know the series and saw this on a shelf, I wouldn't have bought it because of that. Luckily, I love Railgun. It has bits of underwear showing but the plot is fantastic!Apart from that, the quality of the book is excellent. The translations are perfect and keeps Japanese words like "Onee-sama" and "Kouhai" in.Like the previous volume, it is slightly smaller height-wise than other manga. That's a bit annoying.But the end of this volume is a cliffhanger so I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next one!

Level Upper

As Mikoto Misaka and Shirai continue to investigate the increase in psychic crime and its possible connection to the mysterious Level Upper they meet the eccentric scientist Kiyama Harumi who specialises in Cerebral Physiology who is studying those who have used fallen into a coma after being exposed to Level Upper. Meanwhile Uiharu's friend Saten has got a hold of Level Upper and her own sense of inadequacy at being a Level 0 leads her and her friends to fall victim to its effects.This is another very entertaining volume of `A Certain Scientific Railgun' and one that sees the Level Upper arc advance very nicely. The plot is nicely done and the volume has a nice mixture of comedy and action. A highlight of the volume is Shirai's fight with some street punks that is very entertaining.`A Certain Scientific Railgun' is a very entertaining series and this is another good instalment that is worth a full five stars. I also hope that the sister series `A Certain Magical Index' is also released in English soon.

Good high school twist

I do like the premise for this series,namely Chi type power.You usually connect this type of ability with monks or highly trained martial artists.There is a special all girls school that trains it's pupils to focus and enhance this gift.However,having this 'Gift' also makes you a target for outsiders to pit themselves against you to test how powerful you might be.It also leads to those who don't have this ability to try out treatments to gain a similar power.This 'artificial' power is forbidden as it causes the practitioner to deteriorate into a demon if they over use it,so for the untrained,practice doesn't make perfect.There's lots of excellent fight scenes and this volume has a really good,long,technical battle.Good conclusion too.If you check the front cover,there's a panel with a girl writhing on her bed with a rag doll.It sooo makes you want to read the book!Actually,it's just a brilliant cover and a fabulous book!lots of humour and great artwork.

Amazing

I absolutely love this play and own several copies of varying different formats but I must say that I think this is my favourite. Clearly set out in full colour, the text is easy to read and there is plenty of space around it for annotations or notes. On every two-page spread, the left hand side contains notes and clarification of words which are commonly not understood, and information about various performances of the play. In between each act there are several pages used to recap, and at the end there is detailed context and suggestions for activities. A must-have edition for Shakespeare lovers and students studying the play.

Interesting pictures / unreliable captions

Panzerkampfwagen.VI Tiger8. Panzerkampfwagen.V Panther9. The Sturmgeschütz10. Tank Destroyers & Self-Propelled GunsAmazon UK says the book has 176 pages, but in my copy there are 160.I've looked mostly at Chapter 3 because I've been making a Tamiya model of a Panzer II. I've noticed three problems.Firstly, the upper photo on page 44 is not an Ausf F. Judging by the driver's visor and the shape of the upper hull, it's an Ausf A, B or C.Secondly, the lower photo on page 48 is a Russian tank, not a Pz.Kpfw.II as claimed by the author. This is a gross error.Thirdly, on page 42, the upper picture shows a lot of light panzers and men around a bunker. Baxter's caption begins, "During the invasion of France in May 1940 a group of Pz.Kpfw.II's from the 1.Panzer-Division arrive at the Channel coast."However, he has also included the same picture on page 77 of his book The Crushing of Poland, where it's paired with another photo, and here his caption reads, "Two photographs showing German infantry and Panzer men posing for the camera after successfully capturing a Polish bunker. PzKpfw.I and IIs can be seen halted in front of the fortification."Well, obviously the picture can't have been taken in France and Poland, so I think that here again Ian Baxter doesn't know what he's talking about.On the whole I agree with the comment of M. J. Kenny. I have several books by Ian Baxter, and the writing is generally of a low standard. I may buy more because they are comparatively cheap and the pictures are interesting, but it's infuriating not to have more reliable information with them, so I will look for more authoritative authors first.Compare Baxter with Jean Paul Pallud, for example, who is very careful and always goes to a lot of trouble to accompany photos with accurate information. The two are quite different.

Poor tank recognition and locations.............

As with most of Baxters photo books it is said to contain 'new and unpublished. photos. They are neither. The photos themselves are well reproduced but the captions seem to bear little relation to the subject in the illustration. Clearly the author is no expert on German tank types and he captions Eastern Front phots as Normandy as well as the other way around.Great as a photo reference but the text is riddled with many errors.

Brilliant Photographs!

This really is an excellent publication from Pen and Sword's Images of War series and is therefore certain to appeal to a wide range of readers with an interest in armoured fighting vehicles. Military historians together with modellers and militaria collectors will find it invaluable as it is packed to the hilt with a wonderful collection of over 250 rare black and white photographs featuring German tanks and their crews from the Second World War period as well as a number that date back to the early 1930's too.There are more photographs than text, but don't let this deter you as these splendid photographs together with their accompanying text/captions are worth thousands of words and actually tell a unique story on their own, especially as they include pictures men and their machines taken during training as well as during their time on active service on many fronts during the war itself.The author has gone to great lengths in his research to find the splendid subject matter for his book, this has involved scanning official war archives as well as private collections and the result is, that he has produced a excellent value for money and invaluable publication.
